10-minute Break Ideas

“So we got my kid’s schedule, and they have all these 10-minute breaks thrown in! What are we supposed to do in 10 minutes?”

“Why do they make my kids wait 15 minutes between virtual classes?”

Many virtual or hybrid schools have developed schedules that include a 10- or 15-minute break between classes. These breaks serve several purposes:

  • In a hybrid model, students can stagger movement in the hallway to limit crowding and enforce social distancing

  • In a virtual model, students can have a break to rest their eyes and brains before jumping into another virtual class

  • In a virtual model, teachers can answer questions and reset presentations before the next class starts

  • Breaks allow buffer time as many, many parts of this new system will require troubleshooting

How do you make the best of 10 or 15 minutes? Here are some good, better, and best suggestions.

Good

  • Play a quick game on your phone

  • Finish up the assignment for your next class

  • Watch a fun video

  • Close your eyes and relax for a bit (set an alarm first!)

Better

  • Stand up and stretch

  • Get a snack

  • Go for a short walk inside

  • Tidy up your work space

Best

  • Go for a short walk outside

  • Have a healthy snack

  • Talk to a family member

  • Play a quick game with a sibling

  • Meditate or try some yoga
